Search San Bernardino County Traffic Court Records

San Bernardino County traffic citation lookup is handled by the Superior Court of California, County of San Bernardino. The same court file holds infractions like a speeding ticket, misdemeanor traffic charges like driving on a suspended license, and felony cases like DUI with injury. Drivers can search for San Bernardino County traffic court records online, find a case by citation number, check the next hearing date, pay bail, or ask for traffic school. The court file is separate from the state driver record kept by the DMV, and both matter when a ticket shows up on a license.

How to Search San Bernardino County Traffic Court Records

The court's public tool is the Court Access Portal, known as CAP, at cap.sb-court.org. CAP holds active, closed, paid, and dismissed traffic cases filed in any of the court's districts. A case shows up once the citing officer files the citation. CAP search is free; civil document images are sold at $0.50 per page where available. The system is offline 3:30 to 4:30 a.m. for nightly maintenance.

Before searching, have the citation in hand. The citation number, driver name, date of birth, and district name on the courtesy notice all help. CAP enforces a min of five and a max of twenty characters in the Citation Number field. Name searches need at least two letters in first and last name plus a login.

  1. Open CAP Case Search at cap.sb-court.org/search and pick the Citation Number panel.
  2. Type the full citation number, then solve the reCAPTCHA challenge if prompted.
  3. If the citation number is lost, switch to the Use Name radio, enter at least two characters of first and last name, add date of birth, and log in to run a party search.
  4. Review the case header, charges, next hearing date, and bail amount on the case details page.
  5. Move to CAP Case Payment to pay, or contact the assigned district to ask for trial or traffic school.

Case-number jurisdiction codes confirm which district holds the file. Common traffic prefixes are TR, IN, and MS, paired with a district letter pair: SS or DS for San Bernardino, RS for Rancho Cucamonga, VS for Victorville, BS for Barstow, MS for Joshua Tree, FS for Fontana, ES for Redlands, and HS for Big Bear. A case number like RS012345 points to a Rancho Cucamonga filing.

Which Courts Handle Traffic Cases in San Bernardino County

California unified its trial courts in 1998. There are no separate municipal or justice courts in the county. Types of San Bernardino County Traffic Cases on Record

Traffic cases split into three groups: infractions, misdemeanor traffic, and felony traffic. Each group has its own Vehicle Code citations, bail amounts, and points on the driver record.

  • Infractions - the bulk of citations under VC §40000.1. Common charges include the basic speed law VC §22350, unsafe lane change under VC §22107, and no proof of insurance under VC §16028(a). No jail, no jury. A base bail of about $238 often grows past $400 with state assessments.
  • Misdemeanor traffic - driving without a valid license under VC §12500(a), reckless driving under VC §23103, hit-and-run with property damage under VC §20002, and DUI without injury under VC §23152. Up to a year in county jail plus fine, license action, and probation.
  • Felony traffic - DUI with injury under VC §23153, vehicular manslaughter, and felony hit-and-run. These cases move to the criminal department after a preliminary hearing. The full handling lives on the criminal records page.
  • Commercial vehicle and CDL - cases involving a CDL holder follow stricter rules. A serious traffic violation can disqualify a CDL for 60 days on a second offense in three years. Traffic school does not mask a CDL conviction.
  • Photo enforcement - red-light camera tickets under VC §21455.5 are filed as infractions and appear in CAP the same way. Victorville and Adelanto have run red-light camera programs.

What San Bernardino County Traffic Court Records Show

When a citation has been filed, CAP returns a case-details template with tabs. Date of birth is masked in the public view, and demographic fields like race, sex, height, weight, and driver license number need secured access.

Searching San Bernardino County Traffic Records by Citation Number vs by Name

Use the citation number when you have it. It maps to one case. Name search returns more matches and needs a login. Wildcards work as two characters plus an asterisk for party searches.

A common pitfall: the citation number on the paper ticket looks like a case number but is not. The Case Number panel wants the court-assigned case number. Use the Citation Number panel for ticket lookups.

Paying or Contesting a San Bernardino County Traffic Ticket

The court accepts online, mail, and counter payment at each district. Online card payments close the case the same day. Pay before the appearance date printed on the courtesy notice. Missing the date triggers a Failure to Appear under VC §40508, adds a civil assessment up to $300, and may place a hold on the license.

Drivers who want to contest have three plea routes: guilty, no contest, and not guilty. A not guilty plea sets the case for trial. Some districts allow remote appearances by video. A Trial by Written Declaration under VC §40902 is the paper-only path.

  1. Read the back of the citation to confirm the appearance date and the assigned district.
  2. Look up the case in CAP and confirm the bail amount and any prior balance.
  3. To pay outright, use CAP Case Payment or pay by mail at the listed district counter. Payment closes the case and the abstract is sent to DMV under VC §1803.
  4. To ask for traffic school, check eligibility under California Rule of Court 4.104 and Vehicle Code §41501. Submit the request with the bail by the deadline. On successful completion, the conviction is held confidential at DMV and no point is added.
  5. To contest, request an arraignment in person or by mail. Or file a Trial by Written Declaration under VC §40902. The officer responds with their own declaration; the judge rules on the papers. A Trial De Novo is available if the driver loses.
  6. If a date is missed, the court issues a Failure to Appear, adds a civil assessment under PC §1214.1, and notifies DMV under VC §13365 to place a hold on the license.

Public Access Laws for San Bernardino County Traffic Court Records

Traffic court records are court case records. The California Public Records Act does not control case records directly. The court itself sets the rules. Sealing follows CRC 2.550 and 2.551. Retention follows the trial court schedule under Gov. Code §68152. Records may be kept in electronic form under Gov. Code §68150.

Key Statutes:

CRC 2.550 / 2.551 - sets the standards and procedure for sealing court records and requires written findings before a seal order.

Gov. Code § 68152 - lists the retention schedule for trial court records, including traffic infractions.

Gov. Code § 68150 - allows trial court records to be kept and copied in electronic form.

VC § 1808 - sets public access rules for the separate DMV driver record.

Juvenile traffic matters are different. They are filed in Juvenile Court and are confidential under Welfare and Institutions Code §827. Access needs a court order.

Court Traffic Records vs State Driver Records

This is the part most drivers get wrong. The court file and the DMV driver record are two different files. The court file lives at the Superior Court and is reached through CAP. The driver record, called an H-6 abstract, is held by the California DMV. The court reports each conviction to DMV by abstract under VC §1803, and DMV then adds the points under VC §12810 (one or two, based on the violation). The court can fix case-file errors only; DMV must fix DMV errors.

CDL and Commercial Driver Records

Commercial drivers face stricter rules. Vehicle Code §15300 and 49 CFR §383 set the baseline. A CDL holder has a lower BAC limit of 0.04 under VC §23152(d), not the 0.08 for other drivers. Traffic school does not mask a CDL conviction under VC §1808.7, even for a violation in a personal car on a day off.

A serious traffic violation includes excessive speeding, reckless driving, following too close, improper lane changes, and texting while driving. A second serious violation in three years results in a 60-day CDL disqualification; a third triggers 120 days. Out-of-state violations report back to California through the federal Commercial Driver License Information System.

DUI and DWI Cases

California does not use the term DWI. Driving under the influence is charged under VC §23152(a) for impairment and VC §23152(b) for a BAC at or above 0.08. Felony DUI applies under VC §23153 when injury occurs. A first-offense misdemeanor DUI is filed in the criminal department, not the infraction calendar. DMV runs a parallel Administrative Per Se hearing under VC §13353.2 to decide on the license.

For full San Bernardino County DUI case information, see San Bernardino County criminal records.

Traffic School and Deferred Outcomes

Traffic school is the most common deferred outcome for an infraction. Eligibility comes from California Rule of Court 4.104 and Vehicle Code §41501. Most drivers qualify for one infraction in any 18 months. CDL holders do not qualify. Some violations are excluded by code.

The cost is a $52 court administrative fee on top of the regular bail, plus the course fee set by the school. The DMV keeps a list of approved Traffic Violator Schools. On completion, the school sends proof to the court and the court keeps the conviction confidential at DMV. No point is added. The court file still shows the case; the driver record does not show a point.

Sealing or Cleaning Up a Traffic Record

Traffic infractions in California cannot be expunged the way a criminal conviction can. The court records stay. For most drivers, the DMV record is the file that matters; a one-point or two-point violation ages off after three years under VC §1808.

A misdemeanor traffic conviction may qualify for relief under Penal Code §1203.4 (post-probation dismissal). Arrest sealing is available under Penal Code §851.91; the stronger factual-innocence sealing under §851.8 is harder to win. Juvenile traffic matters are confidential under WIC §827; access takes a court order.
